A Big Day Remembered by Sharlene Luke

In December of 2021, my family and I traveled to Trinidad and Tobago to spend my Christmas break with our extended relatives. I was really looking forward to December, 25th while in Trinidad. It felt good to see my relatives in the Caribbean after 2 years, even though we all had to wear masks and do our best to not stay in the same house for long. In my eyes, it was a blessing to even see them in person again. I am blessed to say that no one had Covid-19 at the time of our visit, so that kept spirits high during our family vacation. Before my family even thought of planning a trip for the Caribbean, I was afraid to go back because I did not want to feel sad thinking about my grandmother who passed away in Trinidad 2 years ago.

A few days after my family and I arrived, I started to miss her when I mainly focused on all the pictures of her in her house. Knowing that I would never see her walk through her own house again or be able to talk to her broke my heart all over again. This is why I am glad to belong to such a great family because they kept my mind focused on the positive things in life, such as relatives who are still around, and the fact that Covid could not stop us from traveling to the Caribbean. Christmas day at my grandfather’s house was wonderful.

When the rest of my relatives arrived, my cousins and I sat around the dinner table for lunch, and I really enjoyed their company. My grandfather decided to play his harmonica for the family, and it sounded amazing. One of my cousins named Darriel also decided to play a song for the family. He used his sousaphone to play a Christian song, and all my relatives clapped their hands when he finished playing. He played it beautifully, and it made me love the musical side of my family even more than I already did.

On Christmas evening, some of my cousins, aunts and I decided to play a few games. We played Pictionary and Heads Up, and we all had a fun time. It was especially funny when some could not guess the correct answer for either a hand drawn picture or a random word. Christmas day in Trinidad was truly an awesome one, and I would not trade my family members for anything in this world.

What Does Your Face Mask Say About You? by Sharlene Luke

This is Ms. Parker, caferteria worker at SC State University. She told me, "I could not find another one. I do know what's behind that Nike logo, but I guess what it means to me is, whatever you're facing in life, what has to be done that needs to be accomplish, just do it. No hesitation, no procastranation, just get it done and get to the next level. I love the Nike brand of shoes."

This is Dr. Kalu Kalu, a pharmacist at the Regional Medical Center. He told me "I believe in the scientific research on wearing masks, in order to protect myself against the covid-19 virus, and from people who may be infected or may be exposed from the virus. And also at the same time protect other people who are exposed from the virus or are also infected. I believe that people should wear masks."

This is Mrs. Sharon, a speech language pathologist. She told me, "My face mask is a mask that I made from my sewing machine from cloth that I found at the store. It was made when I could barely find face masks. I chose a design that I would like to wear in public. My mother taught me how to sew, so it was an honor to make this mask to represent her because she passed away a couple of years ago. Not only did I make masks for me but I also made masks for my church members, my friends, my family, and also people in nursing homes and also for Indian reservations. I joined a few groups to show me how to make the masks, and I am pretty proud of myself of the masks that I made and that's why I like to wear it because I made it myself."

This is Ms. Dominique Rolle, who is an employee at the International Office at SC State. She told me, "An individual's choice of mask can tell you so much about their personality. For example, someone who wear a traditional surgical mask can be deemed as someone who likes to follow the rules. Those who double mask show that they are extra safe. However, those who like to take it up a notche and choose a little style like to follow the rules while coloring outside of the lines every now and then again."

This is Dr. Luke,  an empolyee at SC State who is the Director for Office of International and National Student Exchange Programs. He told me, "I believe in student success. Every student has a seat at the table of academic succes at South Carolina State University. I believe in student success and all our students can achieve."
